There will be home delivery once a month to 17,000 places in the Chatsworth area, and businesses will distribute the paper. This may be a very good venue for Chatsworth news. This little newsette was created because the Times gave up its information for the valley. Though the Daily News gives some local news, there was no real Chatsworth information. As this is distributed to perhaps 200 people, it surely does not qualify as a real newspaper, and the advent of a venue to publicize news of the area is exciting.
Your editor met with a representative of the paper and explained the incredible information that the Chatsworth Coordinating Council offers to the community, and the value of getting all the organizations of this great community to work together.
If the information that has been provided in this little newsette can be better handled by another source, then this may be the final swan song of this publication. However, to those of you who have moved from Chatsworth and to whom I have really written, I will create a small list and send the newspaper so you will continue to get the Chatsworth news.

Garden Festival a Great Success

It was warm on the 25th, but what a beautiful day to enjoy the roses that were fully in bloom. Betty and Jim Summers have directed a wonderful group of volunteers who keep the garden beautiful, and the Department of Recreation and Parks has put in a wonderful sprinkler system so that the grass and trees can mostly be watered automatically now.

Clean-Up of the Santa Susana State Historic Park

Earth Day was celebrated by a wonderful group of volunteers who went into the park from Chatsworth Park and got many trails cleared and junk removed that never should have been discarded there. The day was warm, but extra water was provided by the Chatsworth Women’s Club, and even food appeared for the tried volunteers. This community shows up for work as well as play days.

Benches from BID

The Business Improvement District has begun placement of benches along Devonshire between Topanga Canyon Boulevard and the Mason Avenue business area. Anyone is invited to attend. There will be a room in the new library for sale of used books and that will be a new area for need for volunteers. And the community room will be available for meetings for community groups.
So it is an exciting time to get involved. Come and join President Keith Watts and learn about the exciting new things planned for the library.

Care for Canker Sores

One of the new treatments we have available is for treatment of canker sores (aphthous ulcers). These nasty little lesions are quite painful and last about 10 days to two weeks. A new mildly uncomfortable treatment takes 5 seconds, and leaves the area pain free as it heals completely in 3-5 days.
We have been using Debacterol on patients who come in for other treatment and happen to have a canker sore, and they report it is somewhat uncomfortable for the 5 second placement of the material, but that it is less uncomfortable that we have warned them, and that from then on, the area no longer hurts. It can be used for those of you who don’t want to continue with the pain. We do NOT use it for the fever blisters that occur on the lip; it is for the ulcers that usually occur in the cheeks and gum tissues.

Upcoming Events
Women’s Club Provides Blankets for Campers

Up in the mountains north of us the Painted Turtle Camp gives camping experiences for children with different disabilities. This year the Chatsworth Women’s Club raised funds at a Bunco Party to purchase cloth for blankets. Using extreme ingenuity, they selected a fleece fabric of bright red with yellow smiley faces on it. The fleece was cut into fifty-three blanket sizes and sides were cut and tied – many of them in the one-day club meeting!! Others were finished at home by the members and now bring smiles to some happy campers.

Clean-Up Day for State Park and City Parks

The Santa Susanna Mountain Park Association, the State Parks, and Chatsworth Park South, in conjunction with a lot of other groups has April 24th, a Saturday, scheduled for a clean-up of the trash along the trails that go from Chatsworth Park South into the Santa Susana State Historic Park. The Chatsworth Women’s Club is providing water for workers. As it seems that summer heat is already here, plan to arrive early as the work parties are scheduled for 8:00 to 12:00. For those who have never known about the park, it is a time to discover the great hiking trails right here in Chatsworth.
The rangers are now coming more often to the state park, and petitions’ signing is still needed to get the state to want to put up a building. Volunteers can help in Chatsworth Park South even if they can’t climb the trails.

Miracle in Superior Street School

The fifth grade students at Superior Street Elementary School presented “Miracle in Philadelphia” March 29, 30 and 31. Superior Street has some superior parents, teachers, and students. The musical was written a few years ago by Jeff Lantos and Bill Augustine, and the children sang the songs in wonderful chorus and some neat solos.
“For the most part, the speeches contained herein are taken from the public record or from published letters,” Jeff Lantos wrote. Twenty-five of the fifty-five delegates “speak” in this production, and the compromises between large and small states, between slave and free states are addressed. Ben Franklin has a wonderful son “Gotta Compromise.” The sessions were held in secret with the windows closed in the heat of summer, and James Madison’s notes of the sessions were published only when all the delegates (except Mr. Madison) had passed away!
Superior Street fifth graders present this neat musical each year, so for those who missed it, make a note to check with the school next March. Definitely the best way to learn history!
Garden Festival at “The Acre” at the Entrance of Chatsworth Park

On April 25th, the day after the big park clean-up, the Chatsworth Historical Society is having the yearly Garden Festival. Roses are in full bloom now at the Acre, as are many other plants and trees. There will be arts and crafts available to admire and purchase. Local artists have been invited, and plan to lunch at the wonderful tea garden on the lawn.
The Historical Cottage, built about 1910 will be available for tours and new exhibits are planned for the museum. The Historical Society members are particularly thrilled as this year the City of Los Angeles has installed a new sprinkler system that will make keeping the property green all year much easier. The festival begins at 11:00 AM and lasts until 4:00 PM.

Care for Canker Sores

One of the new treatments we have available is for treatment of canker sores (aphthous ulcers). This year the Chatsworth Women’s Club raised funds at a Bunco Party to purchase cloth for blankets. Using extreme ingenuity, they selected a fleece fabric of bright red with yellow smiley faces on it. The fleece was cut into fifty-three blanket sizes and sides were cut and tied – many of them in the one-day club meeting.

The rangers are now coming more often to the state park, and petitions signing is still needed to get the state to want to put up a building. Volunteers can help in Chatsworth Park South even if they can’t climb the trails.

Chatsworth Women’s Club Has Evening Group

The Chatsworth Women’s Club has a group that meets on Thursday evenings from 6-7. They have met at Patricia’s Coffee House on Devonshire Street. The group spearheaded the project to provide a library for Rancho San Antonio Boys home, and has worked with other groups to secure the books, the computers, electrical improvements and an air-conditioner for the library. Members and friends have put in countless hours to get the books catalogued. The group works with the regular Tuesday “Day” group to complete many other projects. The fashion show on March 6 benefits both sections – and mostly benefits the community, for the Women’s Club devotes its earnings to projects for the Chatsworth community.

When Teeth Wear Down

Teeth are designed to be together for seconds of each day, or only when they reach the end of the biting stroke. Unfortunately, often, especially during sleep, a patient will grind the lower teeth against the uppers. And, slowly, over the years, the enamel of the teeth on both jaws will be ground away, leaving the softer dentine to quickly be destroyed.
In order to stop the wear, often a piece of plastic is molded to the teeth so that it can be placed for the night, and removed in the morning. Then the wear that occurs will be on the plastic rather than cause more tooth destruction. As dentists, we prefer to provide the “bruxism appliance” when we detect abnormal wear patterns rather than after a lot of tooth structure is gone. Probably due to the increased stress of modern living, and, coupled with patients keeping their teeth longer and living longer, we are urging more and more patients to consider bruxism appliances to protect their teeth for a lifetime.

Upcoming Events

April 19 & May 17 – Santa Susana Mountain Park – Rockpointe Clubhouse – 7:30 PM
April 20 & May 18 – Historical Society Meeting – “the Acre” Chatsworth Park – 7:00 PM
April 4 & May 2 – Open house – Chatsworth Historical Society - end of Devonshire 1-4 PM
April 3-11 – Spring Break for Los Angeles School District
April 14 – Chatsworth High School Shakespeare Festival Review
April 17 – SFV Symphony Orchestra – Pierce College – 8:00 PM
April 24 – Clean-up Day for Chatsworth Parks North and South .
April 25 – Chatsworth Historical Society Garden Festival – “The Acre” end of Devonshire 11-4
April 26 – Chatsworth Community Coordinating Council – Rockpointe Clubhouse – 11:30 AM
May 5 – Chatsworth Neighborhood Council – Lawrence Jr. High – 7:00 PM
May 8 – Chatsworth Junior Baseball League – Casino Night
May 14 – Chatsworth Community Coordinating Council Banquet – Encino Glen – 6:00 PM
May 15 – Chatsworth Hi School Prom – Universal Studios
May 23 – Superior Street School Carnival
May 25 – Chatsworth Women’s Club – Radisson – 11:00 AM
May 27 – Lawrence Middle School Performing Arts Show – 6:30 PM
May 28 – Lawrence Middle School Grad Night at Magic Mountain

Chatsworth Chatterbox - Volume IV, Number 2

Wednesday, February 04, 2004

Chatsworth Dental Group
21800 Devonshire Street
Chatsworth, CA 91311
Phone (818) 709-1200
chatsworthdental.com

Chatsworth Library to Open in May

Construction of the new Chatsworth Library is due to be completed in April, so that, hopefully, in May or maybe, June, the library will be opening. It will have a community room, and the Chatsworth Neighborhood Council is looking at art for the Library.
Of special importance to many residents of Chatsworth, Bruce Siedman, the librarian who has worked with our community for many years, will be healed from his surgeries and returning to set up the new library.
The Friends of the Library look forward to aiding with extra items not in the city budget, and are looking for more volunteers to help with the new way that used book sales can be done.

Cultural Arts for Chatsworth

The Neighborhood Council has a Beautification Committee, and they have just learned that developers in an area are required to deposit funds for Cultural Arts. The community is indebted to some developer of Public Storage who specifically requested that his funds be spent in the Chatsworth community. The Beautification Committee is considering a mural on the Western/Spanish theme at the new public library. Apparently these will be funds that will continue from other developers, so the citizens of Chatsworth may begin to consider what new cultural arts they may want in Chatsworth, and channel those ideas to the Neighborhood Council.

Chatsworth Women’s Club Birthday with Zena Thorpe

For its 83rd Birthday Celebration, the Chatsworth Women’s Club has asked Zena Thorpe to present her outstanding program on quilting. Zena is the winner of almost all quilting show national and international awards. She will be bringing some of her quilts and it will be a special meeting. It is being held at the Rockpointe Clubhouse. Tickets are only $10.00 for lunch and the program, and are available from club members (and at our office.) Tuesday, February 24th at 10:30 AM.

Fire Stations Get Donations

The Marilla Fire station was the recipient of two commercial refrigerators from funds that the Neighborhood Council had for community improvements. Although firemen long shifts, they do need to occasionally eat, and that requires being able to prepare their meals. So now the firemen there can again have proper meals, while at one of the other stations a barbeque was donated and for another a new FAX machine came in from Best Buys.

FISH Distributed over 100 Baskets at Christmas

Each year the FISH volunteers put together baskets for the needy during both the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. But the need goes on all year long. Irene D’Auria reports that one of the big needs now is to help young single mothers who are living on the streets with their children.

New Irrigation System for Chatsworth Historical Society “Acre”

At the end of Devonshire near the entrance of Chatsworth Park South is an acre of land that is owned by the City of Los Angeles, but the Chatsworth Historical Society as custodian of that acre of land surrounding the Minnie Palmer Cottage that was built about 1910. Watering the grounds has been increasingly challenging in the last years, and finally, the City has begun work on a totally new irrigation system. With difficulty the members of the Historical Society agreed that some trees had to go, and have begun to accept in return for water for the grass that some other trees will die in the next few years.
But the return will be that there will be water to keep the grass and flower beds green and healthy. Much of the work on the gardens is done by volunteers, and trimming roses is preferable to pulling around hoses with sprinklers trying to keep the grass growing.
There is an open house on the first Sunday of each month from 1:00 to 4:00, so stop by to see the good work your tax dollars have done!

Seal out Decay

One of the most exciting dental evolutions has been the reduction in childhood decay. Fluoride gives protection to those children who live where fluoridation of water makes the smooth surfaces of the teeth resistant to decay.
But fluoridation alone does not protect the children born with deep fissures on the biting surfaces of the back teeth. A liquid plastic placed into those deep grooves seals the grooves from the invasion of bacteria. It is a simple procedure, done with no anesthetic, and gives protection to those vulnerable areas of the teeth. More and more children are growing up in the United States without ever knowing what a real “cavity” is, because of the preventive care of fluoride and sealants. They are a true; “gift for a lifetime.”
Sealants are best placed shortly after the permanent teeth erupt into the mouth. The back teeth are often referred to as 6-year and 12-year molars, so those are the ages we place most sealants.
And when a child is protected from early decay, then the young adult need not have the time and expense of dental procedures that were once common; nor will there be the quantity of missing teeth that now require restoration for parents and grandparents.

Upcoming Events

February 4 & March 3 – Neighborhood Council – Lawrence Jr. High – 7:30 PM
February 16 – Santa Susana Mountain Park Association Program Meeting- Rockpointe 7:20 PM
February 17 – Chatsworth Historical Society Program Meeting on Antiques– “The Acre” 7:00 PM
February 21 - Chatsworth Chamber Installation Banquet - Knollwood Country Club 6:30 PM
February 23 – Chatsworth Community Coordinating Council – Rockpointe – 11:30AM
February 24 – Chatsworth Women’s Club Birthday Luncheon – Rockpointe – 10:30 AM
March 6 – Fashion Show – Rhapsody in Blue – The Odyssey - Chatsworth Women’s Club 10:30 AM

Chatterbox, Volume IV - Number 1

Chatsworth
Chatterbox

Chatsworth Dental Group Volume IV, Number 1
21800 Devonshire Street Barbara Pampalone, Ed.
Chatsworth, CA 91311 January 2004
Phone (818) 709-1200 chatsworthdental.com

A VERY HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO ALL

Nick Montano Gets a Break From Iraq

Our nation can’t do for long without Nick’s service in Iraq with the National Guard, but they did allow him a month with his family. Few citizens have had to give up so much time to serve their country. Try to remember that the next time you get a message that jury duty will interrupt your life.

Mr. Chatsworth – Bill Schepler - Has Left Us

Bill was one of the most special of the people who have selected Chatsworth as a place to live. He came here with his parents as a young man from the Wilshire area of Los Angeles. His father invested in land in Chatsworth, and Bill grew up here, collecting lots of stories of the early days of this suburb that are preserved in his book, “Window Into the Past“ that the Chatsworth Historical Society published last year.
Bill attended Canoga Park High, served in the World War in the Maritime Service, and returned to Chatsworth where he worked as a safety engineer for the Los Angeles airport and helped with community projects of many local organizations. In 1980 he was selected as the Chamber of Commerce Chatsworth Man of the Year.
Bill was one of the founders of the Chatsworth Historical Society and, with his brother, Frank, worked to save – AND MOVE- the 1903 community church that was on Topanga Canyon across the open fields that lay west of it in 1965 to the place it now sits in Oakwood Cemetery. The vision of accomplishing that move – impossible now – has helped preserve the history of the west valley.
Bill served the Historical Society as the Director of Photographic Materials for may years, giving lectures about his experiences and general Chatsworth history to the valley schools and countless community groups. This November he presented a fascinating program commemorating the Wright Brother’s flight telling stories of those the early days as planes began to change the world. The propeller – from the back of the plane as that was where they were located – that he brought to the meeting was most interesting and he explained how the vacuum created by the shape of the propeller lifted the plane.
During the last few years, Lila and Bill have worked to identify and write descriptions of the early photographs that are the treasures of the Historical Society Collection. He left a rich legacy – but when one is such a great personality, his parting is a tremendous loss.

BID Plans Its Next Improvements to Business Area

The Chatsworth Business Improvement District planned for and, with the help of DWP, put in the many new trees that now line Devonshire. BID provided the rocks and easy maintenance plants around the trees. More are now being planned for, and the Chatsworth Neighborhood Council has indicated it will help with this improvement project. In addition, watch for the new benches and “hitching posts” that are planned for several spots in Chatsworth.

Chatsworth Neighborhood Council Tackles Problems

On the first weekend of each month the Council meets to discuss problems in our neighborhood. Just now the group is working for compromise between horse owners and those who can’t appreciate some of the droppings horses may leave behind.

Chamber of Commerce Installation of Offers Planned

On February the Chamber will have a dinner and installation of officers.

Improving Smiles

Tooth lightening has become popular in recent years with the introduction of chemicals that lighten the teeth without causing any apparent damage to intact enamel.
Kits are now available in the local supermarkets, though when used without removal of decay may cause problems. Ask us if that is possible for your teeth as they are very economical, though awkward to use, and the results may not be long lasting.
We offer a “take home” system that involves making custom trays and 2-3 weeks of patient time to get the teeth lighter. Results are good and this system offers the most control of color.
Our “in office” tooth lightening takes from 1 to 3 appointments depending on the amount of lightening needed. The fee varies with the amount of office time needed.
For your friends and family we are now offering for new patients who need full mouth x-rays, examination and prophy, to provide the “take home’ tooth lightening system for free. It is our way of welcoming them to the practice.
Not meant to stain your teeth, but our thank you to you for any referrals is a pound of coffee with information about our local Rotary Club that helps with their fund raising as well as saying “thank you” to you.

Upcoming Events

January 4 – Vacation time over - Back to School
January 7 and February 4 – Neighborhood Council – Lawrence Jr. High – 7:30 PM
January 19 – Santa Susana Mountain Park Association Program Meeting- Rockpointe 7:20 PM
January 20 – Chatsworth Historical Society Program Meeting – “The Acre” 7:00 PM
January 26 – Chatsworth Community Coordinating Council – Rockpointe – 11:30AM
March 6 – Fashion Show – Rhapsody in Blue – The Oddessy - Chatsworth Women’s Club

Chatterbox - Volume III, Number 11

Chatsworth
Chatterbox

Chatsworth Dental Group Volume III, Number 11
21800 Devonshire Street Barbara Pampalone, Ed.
Chatsworth, CA 91311 December 2003
Phone (818) 709-1200 chatsworthdental.com

HAPPY HANUKAH

MERRY CHRISTMAS

and a

VERY HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO ALL

Mason Avenue – From Porter Ranch to the 101 Freeway

The opening of Mason Avenue crossing of the railroad tracks has made commuting from Porter Ranch south much easier. They need food donations and people to work packing the baskets on Sunday, December 21st) at the St. John Eudes Catholic Church. The group is also looking for volunteers for the food pantry (less than 2 hours a day). The pantry is open 3 days a week.

Kiwanis Holiday Parade

Each year the Kiwanis Club celebrates the Holidays with a parade down Devonshire Street from Jordan Avenue to Mason Park. Join the festivities at 1:00 PM on Sunday, December 14th. Many merchants in Chatsworth and the surrounding area participate, as well as the schools and the many community organizations.

Signatures for Santa Susana State Historic Park

The Chatsworth Women’s Club continues its collection of signatures it get state funds to develop the State Park. A petition is at our office.

Coffee?

As part of the constant fundraising that must be done to continue the many philanthropic projects that Rotary does, the group is selling coffee – beautiful red bags are now on display at Chatsworth Dental so you can pick some up for the holidays.
And, in the holiday spirit, CDS is giving away a bag of coffee beans or an equivalent gift to each person who refers a new patient to our office. The coffee comes from Mexico as part of a special Rotary project and is helping a special farmers cooperative there to provide better income for the farmers of that area.
Though the 68 Head Start kids who will enjoy the Holiday party and be given gifts by Santa may not be drinking the coffee, they will be enjoying the gifts that the Rotarians have purchased for their holiday. As part of that special December 19th party, the leadership group from Cleveland High School will serve as Santa’s elves and lead in Christmas caroling.
And the rotary Club is still looking for United Airline Miles to be donated.

Thinking About Retirement?

Retirement planning does not usually include teeth, but with the present grocery strike, we are now thinking more seriously about planning tooth retirement. The reason is that dental benefits with insurance companies sometimes terminate at retirement, and even the most secure plans are now being “reviewed” and dental benefits may be the thing that gets cut or reduced from a retirement package at retirement – or even a few years later.
Because of that uncertainly and the longevity that our population now faces, we are looking more closely at big old restorations. Active decay indicates complete failure of a restoration, and big old fillings often need full crowns to prevent future fracture. However, large, old worn restorations and/or teeth need to be evaluated yearly as they are prone to fracture. And a crown can often prevent a future root canal, post and crown or implant restoration. Because insurance companies maximum benefits are reached with one or two extensive restorations, it is wise to look at “the future” a few years before you plan retirement.
And, because some of our patients look so young now, do fill us in about your plans.
On a personal note, none of the doctors nor Frank plan to retire anytime soon.. The practice may change a little as the months and years pass, but we are all enjoying our work and thank those of you who entrust your oral health to our care. Chatsworth is a wonderful place to live and work.

Upcoming Events

December 1 – Lawrence Junior High PTSA meeting – 6:30 PM
December 3 – Neighborhood Council meeting – Lawrence Middle School – 7:30 PM
December 7 – Open House at “The Acre” – Chatsworth Historical Society – 1:00-4:00 PM
December 11 – Winter Performing Arts Show – Lawrence Middle School – 6:30 PM
December 12 – Band concert – Reseda High School – with Lawrence Band playing - 6:30 PM
December 12 & 13 – Chatsworth High School Drama Production -
December 14 - North Valley Symphony Orchestra – Forest Lawn – 2:00 PM
December 14 – Chatsworth Holiday Parade – Devonshire Street 1:00 PM
December 18 & 19 – Chatsworth High School Drama Production
December 19 – last day of school in 2003 for LAUSD

Chatterbox - Volume III, number 10

         Chatsworth
Chatterbox

Chatsworth Dental Group Volume III, Number 11
21800 Devonshire Street Barbara Pampalone, Ed.
Chatsworth, CA 91311 December 2003
Phone (818) 709-1200 chatsworthdental.com

Mason Avenue – From Porter Ranch to the 101 Freeway

The opening of Mason Avenue crossing of the railroad tracks has made commuting from from Porter Ranch south much easier. Their first, on Saturday, November 1st, was outstanding. As part of the program, each fall three young musicians (11-13 years old) who have won the honor of playing solo with the orchestra give wonderful performances. Tickets are $20.00 for a wonderful evening. Fairy Tale Magic (from The Nutcracker & Hansel and Gretel) will be Sat, December 13th. For further information call 347-4807.
AND the New Valley Symphony Orchestra presents free concerts Sunday afternoons (2:00 PM) at Forest Lawns beautiful hall -- as well as private smaller Musicales with dinner in members’ homes. Their free concerts are scheduled on December 14, February 8, and April 18th. Call 773-1095 for more information.
ALSO, for young musicians, think about joining the Valley Youth Orchestra at CSUN. With so much wonderful background from Lawrence Junior High, continuing with the Valley Youth Orchestra will develop more talents.

Needing More United Airline Miles

Last year donations from Rotarians and patients of this office transported 2 very sick children, accompanied by an adult, from Honduras to Spain for surgeries. The group that is helping in Honduras has connections in Spain and housing there as well as the medical treatment will be provided. But the kids are in Honduras and the surgeons are in Spain.
United Airlines lets people with small amounts of miles donate them to 10 specific charities and several donors may provide the miles for one ticket. Rotary International is one of the groups. Another child needs special surgery that is not available in Honduras so the San Fernando Valley Northwest Rotary Club is again collecting United Miles. If you have any that you can donate, it will go to a very needy child.

Possible Fundraisers for Your Charity

A group called Hemacare will donate to your group if people give blood – and more for special platelet donors. Recycle used cartridges from your printers and get money for your group while making the environment safer.
Call Leanne at our office for further information on these ideas.

Looking at All the Tissues of the Mouth

When you visit our office for your check-ups, you may not be aware that we stop to look at all the soft tissues as well as the teeth. We look for any abnormalities in the tissues – especially any ulcer that does not hurt or any lump in the soft tissue. Those conditions may be indicative of oral cancer or other type of pathology. Because we have good lights and are working in the mouth, we use the time to make sure that there is no medical problem lurking in areas that you can’t see. Fortunately, in Chatsworth, there are minimal problems; we want to keep it that way.

Upcoming Events

November 12 – “Care for Caretakers; Avoiding Burnout”- Parenting Seminar at St. Stephens
November 14 – Police Appreciation Day
November 17 – Santa Susana Mt. Sue Brigg’s commented. “Her service contributions have included a wide variety of PTA volunteer roles, from member through President at Superior Street Elementary School, Lawrence Middle School and Chatsworth High School, as well as critical leadership roles with the Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley, the Northwest Valley Council PTA and the Chatsworth Community Coordinating Council….As a member of two major grant writing teams, Suzie played a part in their garnering over $1,000,000 in grant funding for our local schools and Healthy Start program.”

Also honored were Sophie Barcy (work on Neighborhood Watch, PALS, Volunteer Surveillance Team), Roy Inouye (work on Neighborhood Watch, Grafitti Tagger Task Force, Person’s Police, Fire and Public Safety Advisory Committee), Abel Moloto (work with Rotary Youth Leadership Award, and founder of Rotaract of the San Fernando Valley). Lois Lorraine Roberts Orr (work with Chatsworth Women’s Club, DASUN Arts Council – and maker of beautiful pins and medallions that she sells and donates proceeds to numerous charities) and Linda Ross (worked with Chatsworth High School – and district and state school advisory groups, Brownies, Chatsworth Junior Baseball League, her church and the Community Coordinating Council.)

Youth of the Year Nominee Ryan McCaffrey presented an incredible resume, but older Annie Le and Suzanne Nalbandian had more years of doing even more volunteer work for the community, and wore the beautiful medallions of the Youth of the Year.

And, how exciting it was to hear of all the accomplishments of the many Volunteer Service Nominees -- Jerry Amiot and Rick Angel, Kelli Anderson, Sandy Bernards, Maryann Cozza, Mike Green, Charlie Hatfield, Jose Henriquez, Chris Hicks, Dan Huffman, Patti Huffman, Kitty Jolicouer, Kendall Leigh, Diana McGuire, Nellie Newman, Maggie Randall, Laurie Renno, Jave Ryan, Jane Schaffner, Alison Simonoff, and Lori Sternstein.

The newspapers should be filled with the wonderful things these people are doing, and it is delegated to only the little booklet we will keep in the reception room to honor them – and to their friends and family who know how the volunteers of Chatsworth help change the world.

35,000 Year-old Jaw

Romanian researchers swam through an underwater passageway into a largely dry limestone chamber and found a nearly complete lower jaw – the oldest known example of Homo sapiens in Europe.
Fluoridation of Table Salt for Underdeveloped Countries

Putting fluoride in table salt will add it to the diet the same way adding fluoride to water is used in the U.S. and Canada. It is much cheaper, and goes to rural dwellers as well as those in urban areas. In July this editor will be heading for Honduras with the hope that a project can begin that will eventually reduce dental decay about 65%. That might be bad for the dentists of Honduras, but as the children there by the age of 12 have about 7 decayed or missing teeth, reducing that to 3 will only bring it to a partly manageable level.
In Los Angeles the main reason children miss school is because of a toothache, and our 12-year-old population averages one (1) decayed or filled tooth.
The San Fernando Valley Northwest Rotary is asking DWP if they can help with the water studies that need to be done so that the proper amount of fluoridated salt is distributed to the different areas of Honduras. As a dentist who has spent a lifetime fighting decay, the idea of preventing over half of the problem for a population is exciting. As the Coordinating Council does not meet during the summer, it is hard to get community news, and I may not try to publish in July.
But look for the report from Honduras in August.

California Attorney General Has “DO NOT CALL” Pre-registration

A message from Assembyman Tony Strickland says that there will be a national registration of telephone numbers that telemarketers will be required to review before making calls. To pre-register with the California Attorney General’s office for “DO NOT CALL” now one can go to http://nocall.doj.state.ca.us. There is no charge for the service, and it is incredibly simple. If you like telemarketing calls do not register!! Telemarketers who use numbers on the DO NOT CALL list after October will face big fines.

Quiet Philanthropy

In the Chatsworth Women’s Club Newsletter the notes from the Philanthropy Committee were published. The news from there was surely impressive. The group meets monthly, and has many other smaller meetings, and this newsette already reported the work on the Library at Rancho San Antonio. Add to that, two $600. scholarships, three $400.00 scholarships and one for $200. Eleven other charities were selected for $100. 00 to $250.00 gifts, for a total giving in one year of $4,600.00!
This summer the group is taking on a project to provide publicity – and help to get a ranger station established in the Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park. This amazing group of ladies is making a real difference in Chatsworth.

Upcoming Events

June 4 – Chatsworth High School Award’s Night – 7:00 PM
June 4 – Neighborhood Council - 7:30 PM – Lawrence Junior High
June 6 – SFV Symphony – Pierce College – 8:00 PM
June 13 – Lawrence Middle School Band Concert at Reseda High – 6:30 PM
June 16 – Santa Susanna Mountain Park Assoc. – Rockpointe Clubhouse – 7:00 PM
June 21-22 – Van Nuys Airport’s Aviation Expo – Centennial of Flight – 9:00AM to 5:00 PM

Please notify us of upcoming events for other groups.
